the election just matters in profound ways, look at salt lake city, the mormon church after the election said, well, maybe we're going to change our position on home sexuality is a choice you're not born that way. it reverberates all of the way through society. i can't believe that they took this up. the fact that they took it up, it believes they're going to uphold some of these. >> mary, not just the election, the trend has been pretty clear over the last dozen years. i want to show this pew poll back in 2001, 57% of the country opposed gay marriage, only 35% were for. this year the lines have crossed. 48% approaching. going above 50%. support gay marriage in the country. >> well, because americans have common sense. important constitutional, ideology call questions. people living in the real world, the greatest threat are the hetero sexuals who don't get married and create babies. that's more problematic for our culture than home sexuals getting married. in real life, looking down 30 years from now, real people understand the consequences of so many babies being born out of wedlo wedl

to cap off his election win and get a clean start on his second term. a victory for the president would look like this -- get that top income tax rate up. make minimal concessions on entitlement cuts and get it done before the end of this month, avoid that cliff. this week the president said talk on a partial deal on taxes alone will not cut it with him. >> there have been reports that perhaps the republicans go ahead and let the middle class tax cuts get extended, the upper income tax cuts go up, otherwise we don't get a deal and next year we come back. i have to just tell you, that's -- that is a bad strategy for america. it's a bad strategy for your businesses, and it is not a game that i will play. chris: he wants a pretty good deal, a lot of things in it. when he sits down in that room with he and boehner, it's come down to the two of them, are both looking at the fact that obama won the election and he should get a tilt in his discretion, a 60-40 deal? >> i think boehner is a realist and when he said things like bahama care is the law of the land

i am frustrated the rnc did not launch it before the election. they claim they did not have funding for it. which boggles the mind when you think of the rnc. they raised a lot of money. i think if they had launched it, it could have put activities behind it. it could have had meaningful impact. the decision was made not to. that speaks to what i was talking about earlier. we cannot give lip service to, we are the party of inclusion. we mean it. we really do. it was an epic fail 2012 in my opinion. >> let's watch and get your reaction. remember, the elect rat in an offyear election tends to be older and tends to be whiter. these guys are all about survival. they're not going to do anything that they think will make it more likely that someone more conservative than themselves would challenge them in a primary. for them it is about survival. >> what about the risks on the other side? are there risks for president obama in all of this? >> there's risk. you look at immigration, i tend to agree with democrats that he probably has a stronger hand given that republicans feel like they have to do something that he's wanted to do. but, remember, the president had his chance. he promised to do immigration reform in the first year of his first term. and he didn't do it. and he didn't do it when he had all democratic control. so he could have done it. he chose not to do it. so he's under a lot of pressure because he made that same promise again this election. there's a lot of hispanic leaders saying wait a second. you made that promise last time. you broke it. you made it this time. are you going to break it again

you cannot have what i offered you before the election. what election? that's how the republican house speaker is playing the game this week. maybe in the world of the beltway and the sunday morning talk shows, maybe that makes sense. in the real world, here's what happened. here's the bigger picture. our economy broke very, very badly. not long ago on a historic scale. now in the real world, we are having these tiny little glimmers of recovery of economic growth. the first blue bar, that's when the stimulus bill went into effect. the stimulus kicks in and the economy starts to grow after having fallen off a cliff. that's the real cliff. just the other day, we learned our latest glimmer of growth was bigger than we had thought it was, which was awesome. the bad news, though, is that we are in danger of falling back. we are in real danger. the deficit is not the biggest problem in the country. the deficit is shrinking by hundreds of millions of dollars every year the president has been in office. to the extent we need to use debt to accomplish other goals
